Welcome

Welcome dear explorer !
....................................................................

Some steps along this road will take you to a crossroads where two
different roads diverge. At this point, deep in the dark and vast forests
of human history, you will find a nation standing and gravely ponder-
ing about the decision which road to take. This nation is the United
States of America. It is a rather undecided wanderer, this nation, and
over 100 years of time you will observe it taking a few steps on the
one road only to return to try out the fate the second one may bring.
During this odysee, the unsure wanderer gets to know his environ-
ment better and better, soon every tree and grove, every bird's nest and
bush of berries is dear to him and jealously he eyes all the others sea-
rching their way through the woods.

These last 100 years the United States has spend at and close to this
crossroads of time are also known as The American Century. The two
roads departing into opposite directions are the two major brands of
thought that have shaped American foreign policy in the time con-
cerned:  isolation and intervention.

This project, that has its roots in the Facharbeit for my Abitur in 1998
endeavours to follow the paths of our wanderer and analyze the steps
he took and the footprints he left. To gather the necessary information
I have consulted books by distinguished scholars and historians from
both sides of the Atlantic, have taken part in a two weeks seminar at
the "Deutsche SchülerAkademie - Gaesdonck 1997" and have spend
myself long hours thinking about the subject in question.

My work is of no scientific character though it uses some of its tech-
niques. The results presented at this place constitute by no means a
complete depiction of historical reality but rather highlight character-
istic features and acts of American foreign policy.

Altoghether I hope that my work may contribute a small share to a
better understanding of modern history and give insight on the cur-
rent situation as well as a probable projection of future development.
It shall primely serve as a resource for all those interested in history,
world politics, foreign policy and the mere understanding for the
events shaping the world around us. However, I strongly encourage
everyone looking for information here to continue his pursuit in
order to broaden his vision and comprehension of the subject.
If you consider any of the information provided here incomplete or
incorrect, please do not hesitate to notify me. Send an E-mail me!E-mail to ben.wahler[at]web.de .

Now, it is your time to track our wanderer and follow him on his way
to become the most powerful force in all of mankind's history...
...explore The American Century !
